#ItalienGolfGolf at Lake Como
Lake Como is situated in northern Italy, about 50 kilometres from Milan, between the provinces of Como and Lecco. It is the third largest lake in Italy after Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore, and at 410 metres it is the deepest. The lake, one of the most important in Lombardy, with its characteristic inverted Y-shape, winds in three branches: from Como to southwest, from Lecco to southeast and from Colico to north. From the shores of Lake Como you can enjoy extraordinary views of charming villages, beautiful villas and lush gardens. Numerous splendid villas are situated on the shores of the lake. The nearby town of Como is the eponym of the famous lake. In Cernobbio you can visit the 16th century Villa d’Este, which was used by Alfred Hitchcock as the location for the film “Giardino del piacere”. The Villa d’Este Golf Club of the same name, just a few kilometres from Cernobbio, is for many golfers one of the most beautiful golf courses in the north of Italy. Continuing northwards, you will reach Ossuccio, famous for the spectacular Isola Comacina, the only island in the lake, and for the “Sacro Monte di Ossuccio”, the “Sacred Mountain”, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2003. In the nearby towns of Moltrasio and Lenno you will find the villas Passalacqua and Balbianello, locations of Star Wars and James Bond 007 – Casinò Royale. Along the coast you will come to Tremezzo and its famous Villa Carlotta with its terraced gardens and the museum where works by Canova, Thorvaldsen and Hayez are exhibited. At the meeting point of the three branches of the lake is the famous village of Bellagio with its elegant noble villas, including Villa Serbelloni and Villa Melzi, the latter famous for its botanical park. If you go south, you will reach Lecco. Villa Manzoni, home of the Manzoni Museum and starting point of a route in the footsteps of the Promessi Sposi, is a must. Further north you can visit beautiful villages such as Varenna, Bellano and Colico.
